Who is Mr. Kumm?
I was born and raised in Osmond, NE, which is located in Northeast Nebraska. I am the oldest of 4 boys and was raised on a farm. We grew corn, soybeans, and alfalfa. We also raised cattle and for a period of time, also raised hogs. My parents and youngest brother are still engaged in farming. My other two brothers live in Lincoln, NE where they are successful with their careers as well.
While growing up, I had goals of taking over the family farm or becoming an architect. It is always interesting to see how the Lord's plans for you take shape. After teaching Sunday School during my senior year of high school, it became apparant that I was headed for the teaching ministry.
I attended Concordia University in Seward, NE and graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in Education with a Minor in Physical Education and a Lutheran Teaching Diploma (LTD) in December of 2001. Throughout my college years I was actively involved in the Concordia Singers - a liturgical and traveling choir; was director of the University's Intramural Activities program; worked for the Buildings and Grounds Dept; and I officiated Basketball and Football at various levels.
The Lord led me to accept a Call to Zion Lutheran Church and School of Brighton, CO where I began my teaching ministry in January of 2002. I started my teaching ministry in a classroom of First and Second Grade students. While at Zion I also assisted with the Basketball programs and began the Track and Field Program for the Lions.
Also while in Colorado God led me to meet the woman who would eventually become my wife. Sarah and I were married on August 31, 2002. After spending 1 1/2 years teaching at Zion, God had other plans for our ministry.
In August of 2003 I began teaching at St. John Lutheran Church and School of Battle Creek, NE. We spent 5 years in Nebraska and my duties changed in a variety of ways. I began in the fifth grade homeroom and teaching Departmentalized Social Studies and Computers to grades 5-8. In my third year at St. John, I moved to 8th grade homeroom and I continued with the Dept. Social Studies and Computers, and I added the Algebra and Pre-Algebra with grades 7-8. During my fourth year at St. John I added Athletic Director responsibilities and continued teaching in the before mentioned areas. In my final year at St. John, I served as Interim-Principal, taught 7th and 8th grade homeroom, grades 5-8 Social Studies, grades 7-8 Physical Education, and continued to serve as Athletic Director.
Sports has always been a special interest of mine. While at St. John, I began the co-ed Soccer program, coached Girls Basketball and coached co-ed Track and Field. I really enjoy the ministry that takes place within athletics.
While in Nebraska, Sarah and I became the proud parents of our son, Trenton. He was born on Sept. 14, 2006. It is amazing to see him grow. He absorbs everything around him like he is a giant sponge. He is our pride and joy.
The summer of 2008 brought us to Christ the King Lutheran School in Sebewaing, MI. After much prayful consideration, it was apparant that God was directing our ministry to CTK. This was not an easy decision with most of our family and freinds in Nebraska and Colorado, but non-the-less we walk in faith with our Lord and we are blessed to be a part of the Christ the King family, as well as the church families at Immanuel-Sebewaing and St. Paul-Unionville.
I serve Christ the King in various capacities. I am the Principal of the school and serve as the Athletic Director. I share 8th grade homeroom duties, teach Algebra and Pre-Algebra to grades 7-8, and teach Phyiscal Education to Grade 5-8. I have also been coaching soccer, girls' basketball, and my be helping with track-and-field.
I enjoy spending time with my family. My son and I enjoy playing with cars and tractors, and he enjoys when I give him "rocket launches". We enjoy taking walks as a family. My wife enjoys the outdoors - bird watching, gardening, and the general peace and comfort that nature brings. We enjoy camping and fishing, but do not make the time to enjoy these activities more often. We have truly been blessed by our Lord and Savior.
I hope you have enjoyed reading and getting to know me and my family a little bit better!
May God continue to surround you in His arms of love!
