Power of the Tongue
Power of the Tongue
Big Idea: The Tongue has great power to build or to destroy
Bible Verse: A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly. (Proverbs 15:1-2)
Materials: Letters: T – O – N – G – U - E
Message: Do you have any idea what the smallest member of your body is? You are right, the tongue. What member of your body can do the most damage? Right again, the tongue. Let’s look at this word the T-O-N-G-U-E. The T- stands for TONGUE. It is a great muscle that helps us chew our food, speak, and sing. Even though it is very small it can do great damage.
O – the tongue ONLY thinks of itself. It does not consider the feelings of others. It seems to forget that others have feelings as well. The tongue does not see this need.
N-NEEDS of others are disregarded as it speaks unkindly to them. I know you never do that – right? It disregards the needs of others as it calls others names, gossips, and tells lies about others. Do you think this tongue needs God? I would say so – wouldn’t you?
G-God says in the book of Proverbs that “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” If we want to live like Jesus, we must allow Him to help us practice this verse. When we are tempted to be angry and lie, gossip, or name call ask God to help you do the right thing.
U-USE your tongue wisely, and say good and pleasant things. When we have Jesus in our heart, and as we gain more knowledge from His Word, we will allow God to help us with this smallest member of our body. Jesus will come again someday and we will give account for every idle word that we speak.
If we want to spend E-ETERNITY with God, we will seek to please Him while we are on this earth, and in this body.
Remember to USE the power in your TONGUE to speak kindly to, and about others. Remember they have needs for God loves everyone, is hearing what we say about others all the time.
1. How can you show others kindness?
2. What can you say to make someone fell better who is sad?
3. What does our memory verse say about the tongue?
4. How can you put this into practice this week?
