Wood Revised by David O'Brien , and published by Zondervan Publishing House Course Sylabus by: Dr.Phil Hensler Homepage Introduction Patriarchal Background Abraham Isaac,Jacob, and Joseph Sojourn In Egypt And Exodus Life IN Egypt Apologetics & Theology by Dr.Hensler Introduction Subject: HIS-8053 History of Israel / A Survey of Israel's History The author of the text book states that in is written from a conservative perspective. He says that a growing number of scholars are now approaching Scripture as the inerrant word of God,the author is correct. Scripture it's self claims directly to be inerrant. See 2 Timothy 3:16;2 Peter 1:19; 1 Cor.2:9-13; Mt.5:17&18;etc. CHAPTER ONE PP.3-11 In the chapter titled "Introduction" the basis for the rest of the book is laid.We learn the following facts in this chapter.Israeli history goes back to Abraham, but the country of Israel as a force to be reckoned with starts with it's departure from Israel. Source material for Israeli history is found mainly in the Old Testament. However, archaeol ogy also tells much of Israels history, and also confirms Biblical history. From Adam to Abraham on to the patriarchs, poets, prophets, and kings the Bible is rich in the detail of Israels history. However the main purpose of the Bible is to give the redemptive story of Jesus Christ, whose death on the cross, and resurrection is the basis of salvation. The Holy Bible God gave Israel, has affected the world more than any other piece of literature.Other books of religion have been written by men,but the Bible is God breathed, the very word of God.The whole world, but especially the west, and more especially the United States has been shaped by the Bible. Israel's Strategic Location. Israel lies in the fertile crescent. It was used as a link for trade caravans to cross,on the South from Egypt, and opposite Egypt, by Ninevah, Babylon, and Assyria which was also Israels neighbors.According to the author the term Palestine refers to the word "Philistra" meaning home of the Philistines.Zola Levit however would differ from this, and challenge the authors to find any ancient literature , or Biblical term in the Bible that refers to this land as Palestine. THE JORDON RIFT Israel is a small country about 150 miles long, and about 60 miles wide.To put this in perspect ive Israel would fit inbetween Peoria and Chicago Illinois, with plenty of room left over to the left, and to the right. The Jordon River runs in a rift through Israel. To the north of Israel is the Sea of Galilee, and in the southern end the Dead Sea.The Jordon empties into the Sea of Galilee which teems with marine life. The Dead Sea which the Arnon river empties into is almost void of marine life.East of the Jordon rift the land is called Transjordon. It receives plenty of rain , but most of it drains back into the Jordon. This land is good grazing land, but not very good for farming. In Old Testament times it was bordered by Bashan,Gilead,Moab and Edom. Also in this area is a mountain range which includes the city of Petra,a city carved from cliffs. THE CENTRAL MOUNTAINS West of the Jordan lies a series of 3 mountain ranges.Galilee to the North,in the middle Mount Ephraim, named after the tribe of Ephraim, and the southern mountain area known as Judea. By and large it was good farm land all the way up to the slopes of Judea where the land became semi arid,to arid ,and desert land. THE COSTAL REGION The Costal region lies betwen the mountains of Israel and the Mediterranean. It was mostly good for farming. It is interrupted by the ridge of Carmel. To the North of the ridge is the Esdraelon valley,to the south the Plain of Sharon, and then Gaza. All good farm land except Gaza which is only marginaly good. CLIMATE The climate is subtroical suitable to growing oranges ,lemons, and grape fruit. There is about a 6 month dry season, and about a 6 month wet season. The famous latter rains are said to fall between March and April. HISTORY DIVISIONS The author divides Old Testament history into seven periods:(1) the patriarchal(2)the Egyptian {from Joseph in Egypt until the Exodus} (3) the wilderness travels (4)the period of the Judges (5) the time of the united monarchy (6) the divided monarchy (7) the exilic and post ex- ilac period, until the intertestmenatal period about 450 B.C. ![]()
