How to Improve Search Engine Ranking

Summary of “How to Improve Search Engine Ranking”

Ranking well in search engines is a crucial concept that many organizations, whether fully online-based or brick and mortar with a web presence, overlook when creating their website. Whether you build your website by yourself or have someone design it for you, you need to be equipped with the basic concepts and terminology of search engine optimization (SEO) if you are going to succeed online.

So, how can you improve your search engine ranking? In this video, Mark and Kurt Steinbrueck of OurChurch.com discuss the different aspects involved in ranking well in the search engines and driving traffic to your website.

To begin with, Mark and Kurt first identified the ‘basics’ that are critical for every site:

The Basics:

  • Make sure the search engines access your site.
  • Make sure your site is in a format the search engines can read
  • Make sure you have good, clean navigation throughout your site (good for users, too)

On-Page Optimization:
Once you have the basics in place, you can begin optimizing the content of your own site for the search engines.  This involves using keywords on using keywords in your website’s content, setting up meta tags, and having a internal linking structure which clearly indicates what each page is about, as well as other things.

Link Building:
You can only get so far in the search engines with on-page optimization.  To improve search engine ranking for competitive keywords, you have to get links.  To be clear, these are links from other people’s websites pointing to your website.

Links work like votes or recommendations to the search engines.  The more links (votes/recommendations) the more authoritative they think your website is.  When these links come from reputable, authoritative sites, they mean even more to the search engines.  Lastly, the links should, as much as possible, from websites related to your site, about similar or related topics.

Co-citations:
A website doesn’t actually have to link to your website for you to get credit.  If they even mention your site or your organization, Google can usually recognize that mention and give you credit for it, increasing your website’s authority.  These mentions are called “co-citations” and they are becoming more and more important for improving your search engine rankings.

Putting these practices in place is how to improve search engine ranking.  Granted this is more of an overview of the topic.  We have other videos and blog posts that go into more detail about the various aspects of SEO and, if you’d like help with improving your search rankings, we also offer SEO services and would love to help.
