Then you can go to the search engines (such as Google) and do searches for various SEO terms and see where that SEO company ranks in the search engine results.  If they have a specific niche they serve, like SEO for churches, make your search you include keywords describing their specialty when you search. This will give a better idea about how good the company actually is at providing the services they promise.  After all, if they can’t get themselves to rank well, why should you think they will get you ranking well.

One additional note on this:  Check more than just the top ten, especially if you are just looking for general SEO services.  This is a very competitive field with thousands of companies out there with, obviously, people who know how to get high rankings.  So, a company that ranks in the top 30 or 40 for a general SEO keyword, isn’t doing badly.  They are still showing they know what they are doing and they may charge a lot less than a company in the top ten.
